Crossing Threads® is the collaborative fibre art practice of sisters Lauren and Kass Hernandez, Australian-born artists of Filipino heritage living and working on Wangal and Gadigal Land in Sydney. Together, they use fibre as a way to tell stories, exploring emotion, memory, and connection through texture and form.
Their process is intuitive and meditative. Describing it as "breathing through our hands," the sisters allow each piece to grow naturally, guided by rhythm and repetition. Working on custom-built frame looms, they embrace the slow, physical nature of weaving, finding meaning in the patience, balance, and presence it requires.
Over time, Lauren and Kass have developed their signature ‘interknot’ technique, intertwining hand-knotted fibre chains to create sculptural, three-dimensional surfaces. The resulting works often echo the shapes and movement found in nature, reflecting ideas of resilience, impermanence, and renewal.
Materials play a vital role in their storytelling. Each work is composed of carefully chosen fibres, including Australian Merino wool and plant-based threads, as well as upcycled, deadstock, and foraged materials. By giving new life to what might otherwise be discarded, they celebrate transformation and sustainability in both material and meaning.
Through Crossing Threads®, Lauren and Kass explore themes of sisterhood, their Filipino heritage, and human connection. Their practice honours the quiet power of labour and touch, a reminder that art, like thread, holds the capacity to mend, bind, and transform.
Their work has been featured by The Design Files, VOGUE Philippines, SBS, Est Living, Elle Decoration UK, The Woolmark Company, Home Beautiful and exhibited at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Gallery 76 Queen Street, The Australian Design Centre, Fairfield City Museum & Gallery and Sydney Road Gallery.
Since its inception, Crossing Threads® has had the privilege to share its art with many collectors worldwide.
